Trench Rescue in Daly City

On July 27, 2018 at 11:20 a.m., 5 Fire Companies, 4 Chief Officers, 2 Urban Search and Rescue Units and 1 Information Officer responded to a trench rescue at 1 Martin Street in the City of Daly City.

The first arriving crews found an adult male construction worker trapped by dirt and debris from a trench collapse.  Firefighter/paramedics attempted to treat the victim, but was determined to be deceased at the scene.

The accident appeared to have occurred when construction crews were grading a 12-foot deep trench to install a 24-inch, concrete storm drain pipe for a new housing development.

Due to the instability of the trench and surrounding area, two Urban Search and Rescue units were called to the scene to extricate the victim. Emergency crews remained on scene for over 12 hours to complete the operation.

The incident is being investigated by the California Department of Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
