Emergency Preparedness

Community Emergency Planning & Disaster Preparedness Division The Community Emergency Planning & Disaster Preparedness Division coordinates all aspects of planning and preparedness as it relates to small and large-scale emergencies. This includes anything from a house fire to a catastrophic earthquake.

Public Education is an important part of emergency preparedness. The Community Emergency Planning & Disaster Preparedness Division conducts a variety of educational and community outreach programs to get individuals and families prepared for emergencies. These include school programs, speakers bureaus, exhibits and public displays, media releases, door-to-door canvassing, CPR training and certification, and Community Emergency Response Team (Daly City & Pacifica) and Community Emergency Volunteer (CEV – Brisbane) programs. for information on any of these programs contact the North County Fire Authority at (650) 991-8138.

The Community Emergency Planning & Disaster Preparedness Division provides the following presentations at no cost to the community:

Basic Emergency Preparedness– This is a one hour presentation that is geared towards organizations such as Homeowners Associations, PTA’s and Service Clubs. It is designed to give citizens a basic understanding of the threats we face and the steps to take to become better prepared.

Earthquake Preparedness– This is an approximately 2.5 hour presentation that will provide information on how to prepare your home for an earthquake or disaster; how to build a disaster kit for your home, workplace and vehicle; how to secure utilities including gas, water and electricity and how to use a fire extinguisher.

Community Emergency Response Team (CERT)– This is a twenty-hour training course held over an eight week period that educates and trains individuals in basic disaster response skills, including general preparedness, fire safety, disaster medical operations, light search & rescue, team organization, disaster psychology and terrorism. The training concludes with a practical “hands-on” exercise to apply the many skills taught in the classroom.

Exhibits & Public Displays

The Community Emergency Planning & Disaster Preparedness Division coordinates staffed exhibits and public displays at a number of community events, including (but not limited to) health & safety fairs, school events, the Fil-Am Festival in Daly City, Pacifica’s Fog-Fest and Brisbane’s Day in the Park. Fire personnel at these events distribute safety information and conduct safety demonstrations upon request.
